I found it later when I had the luxury of being able to read what I wanted, rather than that which was assigned, and have used it to some degree in home schooling my son (though it is too difficult for most high school students). This book was published and available at almost the same time I finished my degree. Through impeccable research, he has uncovered history and culture that was not readily available those many years ago. Bennett gives voice to Black Americans, and to the cultures they brought with them. But of course, when conquerors succeed in occupying another land militarily and politically, the next thing to be done is to eradicate the culture as it exists, and to pretend there WAS no history before the conqueror arrived (aside, perhaps, from a brief reference to how bad it used to be). I didn’t WANT to read about the colonizers. Everywhere I looked (in conventional sources, such as the university library and trade journals) it said, “See Europe”. In a story whose timeline folds in upon itself like an origami centipede, the three cross a barren landscape to enter the City, a ruin laid waste by the activities of the Company. The other is Moss, who, although she “presents” as an attractive young woman, is both a time traveler and exactly what her name suggests: a plant, albeit one that can do a lot of very unplantlike things. Dead Astronauts is a prequel of sorts to his 2017 novel, Borne, or maybe a sequel, or maybe it takes place in a parallel universe very like, and sometimes intersecting with, the one in Borne. A favorite of mine was Gone With The Draft, by Park Kendall, which included cartoonish depictions of the life of an Army recruit. Monsarrat’s work was just a big novel, and I could only guess at the cruelties its title evoked. After reading it I knew and understood. I was looking for books with artwork, or photographs, and there were plenty of them. Perusing the shelves, I found a title that I remembered seeing on his first modest bookshelf back in the late-1950s, and wondering about it long before I could read beyond an elementary level, Nicolas Monsarrat’s The Cruel Sea. But of course, the fact that Emma is a witch, and that Brendan used to be quite the player, that does have to come back around and mess up their happiness. Now, Emma and Brendan are "happily ever after". And that carries through to Spellcaster, only the curse has been broken as we saw in the first book. Some of what I really loved about the first book was the whole cursed love thing. Well, you can guess just how pleased I was when I met the author herself this past November, and got to read the prologue to the new book, and found out I was getting to go back into Emma and Brendan's world! And I was not disappointed by the sequel at all! And that the bonus material at the end said there was going to be a book from Angelique's point of view next, and I decided I'd have to just settle for that. It's so funny that one of the things I said after I finished reading the first one, was how much I wanted back into that world. So, I went back and re-read my review of Spellbound.
